This hands-on experience invites you to learn the art of traditional basket weaving from a fifth-generation artisan in his home workshop. You'll learn about the origins of his creative practice and make your own piece to take home, with his expert guidance throughout the process.

Basketry was one of the earliest crafts in Mesoamerica, predating the domestication of crops and handmade ceramics. Because this practice uses biodegradable materials, few historical remnants remain—so its history lives on through family traditions and storytelling. By learning about the skill, time, and dedication involved in creating these baskets, you'll help support local artisans through both financial investment and cultural preservation.

Your basket-making workshop will last roughly two hours. Afterward, you’ll continue the carrizo theme with a meal at a restaurant that serves Oaxacan tlayudas on handwoven carrizo plates.

These artisans are living examples of the role storytelling plays in preserving ancestral artistry. While basketry declined with the introduction of plastic, it still holds an essential place in the rural economy. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. You’ll stroll along the shotengai, an old shopping street where locals would spend their leisure time browsing shops, eating snacks, and greeting neighborhood friends.

Officially known as Parque Tres de Febrero, this urban oasis covers over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) and features serene lakes, lush gardens, and tree-lined walking paths, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature.


1. Rosedal (Rose Garden) – A stunning rose garden with over 18,000 roses, charming white bridges, and elegant statues, offering picture-perfect scenery.

2. Lago de Regatas (Boating Lake) – Visitors can rent paddle boats or rowboats to explore the peaceful waters while admiring the city skyline.

3. Jardín Japonés (Japanese Garden) – One of the largest Japanese gardens outside Japan, featuring koi ponds, red bridges, and tea houses for a tranquil escape.

4. El Planetario Galileo Galilei – A futuristic dome-shaped planetarium, offering interactive astronomy exhibits and stunning night sky projections.

5. Sculptures and Monuments, including the famous "Monumento a los Españoles", a grand marble structure celebrating Argentina’s Spanish heritage.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light and cooler temperatures. Rent a bike or bring a picnic to fully enjoy this relaxing escape in the heart of Buenos Aires.

Bosques de Palermo

Tucked away from the bustling tourist areas, Güzelyurt Village provides an authentic glimpse into Cappadocia’s rural charm. This lesser-visited gem boasts historical treasures, friendly locals, and a serene atmosphere.
1. Underground Cities: Explore fascinating underground cities that once served as refuges for early Christians, featuring intricate tunnels and chambers carved deep into the earth.
2. Rock-Cut Churches: Marvel at ancient churches carved into the rocky landscape, adorned with fading frescoes that tell stories of the region’s rich spiritual history.

Güzelyurt Village

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

Day Hike: wedding Cake Rock

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the most stunning examples of Marinid-era Islamic architecture. Built in the 14th century by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, this madrasa (Islamic school) served as both a center of learning and a place of worship. Unlike many religious sites in Morocco, Bou Inania is one of the few madrasas open to non-Muslim visitors, allowing them to admire its breathtaking zellij tilework, intricate wood carvings, and grand courtyard. A masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, the madrasa is a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and photography.

1. The grand entrance, framed by an elaborately carved cedarwood door, welcomes visitors into a world of geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy, and fine stucco work.

2. The courtyard, with its marble floors, central fountain, and exquisite zellij tile mosaics, is a striking example of Moroccan-Andalusian design and a perfect spot for photography.

3. Towering above the medina, the madrasa’s green-tiled minaret is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Fez and can be admired from various rooftops around the city.

4. The student quarters, featuring small but beautifully decorated rooms, provide insight into the daily life of scholars who once studied theology, astronomy, and law within these walls.

5. The tranquil ambiance of the madrasa, combined with its artistic mastery, offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling souks just outside its doors.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the late morning for the best lighting to capture the intricate details of the carvings and mosaics. Arrive early to avoid crowds and fully appreciate the serenity of this historic site.

Bou Inania Madrasa

Portugal is home to vast cork oak forests (montados), particularly in the Alentejo region, where traditional cork harvesting has been practiced for centuries. Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, used for everything from wine stoppers to sustainable fashion. These forests not only support rural communities but also provide a crucial habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Iberian lynx. A guided visit to a cork farm offers a fascinating look into this eco-friendly industry, from the hand-harvesting process to the transformation of cork into everyday products.


1. Witness the centuries-old tradition of hand-harvesting cork using special axes—trees are carefully stripped every 9 years, ensuring sustainability.

2. Learn about the cork cycle, from the first harvest (which takes 25 years) to the process of drying, boiling, and crafting cork into products.

3. Walk through stunning cork oak landscapes, dotted with wildflowers, grazing livestock, and ancient trees that can live for over 200 years.

4. See cork innovations, from wine stoppers and flooring to handbags and eco-friendly accessories, highlighting cork’s role in sustainable industries.

5. Spot local wildlife, including eagles, storks, and wild boars, as the montado ecosystem is one of the most biodiverse in Europe.

Visitor Tip: Visit in late spring to early summer (May–July) to see the cork harvest in action. Pair your visit with a stop at a local Alentejo winery, where you can see how Portugal’s finest wines are sealed with this sustainable material.

Cork Oak Forests

Elafonisi Beach, located on the southwestern coast of Crete, is an exotic paradise famous for its crystal-clear waters and pink-tinted sands. Connected to a small islet, the beach offers shallow lagoons and pristine stretches of sand, making it a dream destination for beach lovers.
1. The beach’s shallow, warm waters are perfect for wading and swimming.
2. Its iconic pink sand, formed by crushed coral and shells, is a rare and magical sight.
3. Protected as part of a Natura 2000 site, the area boasts unspoiled natural beauty.
4. Visitors can explore the nearby islet, home to unique plants and wildflowers.
5. The surrounding turquoise waters and soft sands create an unparalleled sense of relaxation.

Elafonisi Beach

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.

Mining the Past

Cefalù, a charming coastal town on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy, is a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its roots dating back to the 4th century BC, Cefalù has evolved into one of Sicily's most picturesque destinations. The town is nestled between the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea and the towering La Rocca, a massive limestone cliff that dominates the skyline. Known for its medieval streets, stunning Norman architecture, and golden beaches, Cefalù offers a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.
