You begin the day with pickup from your accommodation in San Miguel de Allende and travel through the scenic highland countryside – with a stop at a historic hacienda - before arriving in Guanajuato, which is shaped as much by geology as by history. Once a major silver-mining center of New Spain, it developed vertically — its narrow streets, stairways, and underground tunnels responding to steep terrain and seasonal rivers.

Accompanied by local guide Cesar Nistal Gonzalez, you explore the city through plazas, alleyways, and former river tunnels that now function as roadways. Cesar explains how mining wealth, colonial power, and later independence movements shaped the city’s physical form.

Hosted by an architect, this full-day excursion analyzes Santiago’s preserved pre-colonial grid and the strategic placement of a city within a natural basin. Diego Baloian is an architect holding a degree from the Universidad Finis Terrae and a Master's in Cultural Heritage from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). As the founding partner at DBG Architecture and Massantiago, his work focuses on architectural design, the restoration of heritage buildings, and urban planning. He has led and participated in projects and seminars in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary. 

Diego has also organized conferences and exhibitions on Latin American architecture in collaboration with Guiding Architects Network, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH).

Morocco

This is an exhilarating and demanding ascent to the Toubkal Refuge, starting from the village of Imlil. This demanding trek spans a total climb of 2500 meters (8,202 feet) to 3207 meters (10,522 feet) at the refuge, suitable for those with good fitness levels but does not require technical climbing skills. 

The trek passes the spiritual landmark of Sidi Chamarouch, a Muslim pilgrimage spot located in a very scenic place, before the steep climb to the refuge, set just below the summit of Mount Toubkal. Here, trekkers can enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding High Atlas Mountains. 

This trek offers a challenging yet rewarding experience, providing both a sense of accomplishment and spectacular scenic beauty. This full-day trek typically taking about 8 hours. However, the pace depends on your comfort, and Ahmed's team will ensure the group moves at a speed that suits you.

This trek to Toubkal Refuge offers you an up-close experience with some of the highest points in the High Atlas that are accessible without technical climbing. You’ll ascend into one of North Africa's most dramatic landscapes passing through natural and spiritual landmarks.

You'll learn how Sardinian filigree is created—from raw materials to the delicate process that gives each piece its unique character. Torre de Belém: The Sentinel

Guatemala

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

The historic city of Silves, located in Portugal’s Algarve region, offers a blend of rich heritage, stunning architecture, and delicious local sweets. Once the thriving capital of the Moorish Algarve, Silves is steeped in history, with landmarks that tell stories from centuries past. 

1. Silves Castle, a red sandstone fortress that towers over the city, is one of Portugal’s best-preserved Moorish castles. Dating back to the 8th century, its thick walls and towers offer incredible views of the surrounding countryside. Inside, you can explore ancient cisterns, arched pathways, and beautifully landscaped courtyards that make the history come alive.

2. The Silves Cathedral, located near the castle, is a remarkable Gothic structure built on the site of a former mosque. Step inside to admire its vaulted ceilings, ornate carvings, and tombs of local nobility. The cathedral’s unique blend of architectural styles reflects the city’s complex history of Moorish and Christian influences.

3. Silves is renowned for its traditional Algarvean sweets, especially treats made from almonds, figs, and carob. Pastry shops throughout the city offer a taste of classics like “Dom Rodrigo,” a delicate almond-and-egg-yolk dessert, and “Morgado,” an almond cake often filled with sweet egg cream.

4. The city’s Arade River waterfront is lined with picturesque cafes and offers a peaceful place to relax. Once a vital trading route, the river now provides a scenic backdrop as you stroll through Silves’ cobbled streets.

5. Annual events like the Silves Medieval Fair, held each summer, transform the city with reenactments, traditional markets, and street performances. It’s an immersive experience that brings Silves’ storied past to life in a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere.

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

The Costa Brava region of Catalonia, Spain, is dotted with charming coastal towns near Begur, each offering a perfect blend of Mediterranean beauty, crystal-clear waters, and historic charm. These seaside villages are known for their hidden coves, picturesque beaches, and whitewashed houses, making them ideal for relaxing, hiking, and enjoying fresh seafood along the coast. Whether you’re seeking quiet coves, scenic hikes, or vibrant culture, these towns offer something for every traveler.

1. Calella de Palafrugell
A postcard-perfect fishing village with whitewashed houses, rocky coves, and the famous El Canadell Beach. Visit in July for the Habaneras Festival, a celebration of traditional sea shanties.

2. Llafranc
Known for its charming promenade and scenic views from the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse, Llafranc is ideal for beachgoers and foodies seeking fresh seafood by the water.

3. Tamariu
A quieter option with a beautiful crescent-shaped beach and turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. The nearby Camí de Ronda hiking trail offers stunning coastal views.

4. Sa Tuna
A hidden gem near Begur, Sa Tuna is a small cove surrounded by colorful fishermen’s houses and pine-covered cliffs, offering peaceful seclusion and calm waters.

5. Aiguablava
Famous for its crystal-clear waters and sandy beach, Aiguablava is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and enjoying scenic dining with sea views.

Visitor Tip: Visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds, especially in summer. Driving is the most convenient way to explore these coastal towns, and the Camí de Ronda trail connects many of them for breathtaking coastal hikes.

Coastal towns near Begur

Arkadi Monastery is one of Crete’s most historically significant sites, symbolizing the island’s fight for independence. Surrounded by olive groves and mountains, this 16th-century monastery combines beauty with deep cultural and historical importance.

Nestled in the heart of Trieste, the Canal Grande is a serene waterway, offering a picturesque glimpse into the city's maritime heritage. This historic canal, surrounded by majestic buildings and bustling cafes, serves as a charming testament to Trieste's unique blend of Italian and Austrian influences. Why you should visit?
1 - The Canal Grande, designed in the 18th century, was originally a key maritime route for Trieste. Lined with neoclassical architecture, it reflects the city’s prosperous trading history. This waterway, now a peaceful haven, was once bustling with merchant ships, echoing Trieste's vibrant past.

Step back in time at the Museum of Romanticism in Madrid, a museum dedicated to the artistic, literary, and cultural aspects of the Romantic period. Located in a late 18th-century building in the Calle de San Mateo, the museum offers a glimpse into the customs, manners, and daily life of 19th-century Madrid. Inaugurated in 1924 as Museo Romántico, it was rebranded as Museo Nacional del Romanticismo in 2009, reflecting its status as a national treasure. Top 5 highlights:
1. The museum, housed in a building dating from the late 18th-century, was originally linked to the patronage of the Marquis of Vega-Inclán. Its architecture alone, consisting of two stories plus an attic floor, provides a historic backdrop to the exhibits.
2. Explore an extensive collection of 19th-century paintings, featuring works by prominent artists such as Francisco de Goya, Leonardo Alenza, and Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer. The collection also includes romantic-era furniture, pianos, porcelain, and other objects reflective of the time.
3. The museum's exhibits are arranged in the context of a historic house with various rooms like a dining room and a billiard room. These thematic rooms offer insights into the everyday life of Madrid's gentry during the Romantic period.

This is the heart of Dubrovnik, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can explore narrow streets, historic buildings, and the famous city walls that offer stunning views of the Adriatic Sea​​. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets, marvel at the architectural beauty, and soak in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea from atop the city walls. Why visit:
 
1: Begin your journey in the Old Town by meandering through its labyrinthine streets. Each alley and square tells a story, with landmarks like the Onofrio's Fountain, Jesuit Staircase and the Rector's Palace providing glimpses into Dubrovnik's rich past.
 
2: As you explore, take note of the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings that line the streets. The Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise are highlights, showcasing the city's architectural diversity and ingenuity.
 
3: Delve deeper into the history at cultural institutions like the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum or the Cultural History Museum. These collections provide context to the city's prosperity in the Middle Ages and its role as a powerful maritime republic.

Old Town Dubrovnik

Nestled along the western coast of Sicily, the Marsala Salt Pans present a spectacular blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity. This sprawling network of shallow salt pools, used for the traditional method of sea salt extraction, dates back to the Phoenicians. The Marsala Salt Pans are also a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Here are some things to look for when you visit:

1: Salt Harvesting Tradition: The salt pans showcase a centuries-old method of salt harvesting. Sea water is channeled into shallow ponds and left to evaporate, leaving behind high-quality sea salt. 
2: Eco-System and Wildlife: The area is a thriving ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of bird species, especially during the migration seasons. Flamingos, herons, and storks are common sights, making it a fantastic spot for birdwatching.
3: Windmills and Museums: Scattered across the salt pans are iconic windmills, once used to pump water and grind the harvested salt. Some of these windmills have been converted into museums, providing insights into the history and process of salt production. We also recommend visiting the Salt Museum of Saline Culcasi, located in the Nubia district, this museum is a vivid testament to the harmonious relationship between the sea and the land. 
4: Panoramic Views: The salt pans offer mesmerizing views, especially at sunset when the sky and water transform into a palette of vivid colors. The blend of nature and craftsmanship makes for an unforgettable sight.
5: Culinary Significance: Marsala salt is renowned for its quality and is a staple in Sicilian cuisine. You can purchase locally harvested salt, a unique souvenir representing the region's culinary heritage.

How Not to be Templed Out.

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.
