Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Pause in the courtyard to take in panoramic views of the Golden Horn, then, if time allows, sit for helva and tea at a nearby terrace café still frequented by porters and theology students.

Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. You’ll begin with a private tour through its original production site and museum—home to ancient kilns, hand-thrown molds, and decorative pieces that reflect the fusion of Islamic and European styles. Then comes your own initiation into the craft. Guided by master artisans, you’ll sit at the potter’s wheel for a “baptism of clay,” shaping a vessel from scratch. Explore Madrid's famous Barrio de las Letras in this private walking tour. For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Why visit?
1. The CAAC houses a diverse collection that spans artistic trends from the mid-20th century to the present, featuring works by notable artists such as Luis Gordillo, Candida Höfer, and Louise Bourgeois.
2. The Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, where the CAAC is located, offers visitors not just art but a journey through history. The monastery, with its Mudéjar architecture, showcases the evolution from a religious site to a pottery factory by Charles Pickman in the 19th century, and finally to a contemporary art centre. This site has hosted Christopher Columbus and was a pivotal location in Seville's ceramic industry​​.

CAAC: Modern Meets Monastic

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain
