Melina, a native speaker of German and Spanish and a passionate polyglot, holds a degree in Translation and Interpretation as well as a Master's in Language Teaching. She has traveled and lived in various parts of the world, including Spain, Australia, Germany, and Portugal, but the irresistible charm of Sardinia captivated her, leading her to settle on this Mediterranean island in 2015. Andrea Villers studied in Granada and holds a master’s in Curatorial Studies from UNAM. She directs a cultural consultancy, developing exhibitions and researching the cultural sector in Mexico and Latin America. She also designs strategies for organizations investing in culture. The Japanese art of visible mending is sashiko, a technique that combines the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi with the always en vogue concept of sustainable practices. In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Time Travel: Limite Zero

Antelope Canyon may be the most famous of Utah’s slot canyons,  but if you want to avoid the large crowds, go to Buckskin Gulch - harder to reach but possibly, more enjoyable.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.

Through the Wire

The Costa Brava region of Catalonia, Spain, is dotted with charming coastal towns near Begur, each offering a perfect blend of Mediterranean beauty, crystal-clear waters, and historic charm. These seaside villages are known for their hidden coves, picturesque beaches, and whitewashed houses, making them ideal for relaxing, hiking, and enjoying fresh seafood along the coast. Whether you’re seeking quiet coves, scenic hikes, or vibrant culture, these towns offer something for every traveler.

1. Calella de Palafrugell
A postcard-perfect fishing village with whitewashed houses, rocky coves, and the famous El Canadell Beach. Visit in July for the Habaneras Festival, a celebration of traditional sea shanties.

2. Llafranc
Known for its charming promenade and scenic views from the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse, Llafranc is ideal for beachgoers and foodies seeking fresh seafood by the water.

3. Tamariu
A quieter option with a beautiful crescent-shaped beach and turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. The nearby Camí de Ronda hiking trail offers stunning coastal views.

4. Sa Tuna
A hidden gem near Begur, Sa Tuna is a small cove surrounded by colorful fishermen’s houses and pine-covered cliffs, offering peaceful seclusion and calm waters.

5. Aiguablava
Famous for its crystal-clear waters and sandy beach, Aiguablava is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and enjoying scenic dining with sea views.

Visitor Tip: Visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds, especially in summer. Driving is the most convenient way to explore these coastal towns, and the Camí de Ronda trail connects many of them for breathtaking coastal hikes.

Coastal towns near Begur

Preveli Beach is a hidden gem where a river meets the sea, surrounded by a lush palm forest and dramatic cliffs. This unique beach, located at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, offers a perfect mix of adventure, natural beauty, and relaxation.
1. A hike through the scenic Kourtaliotiko Gorge leads to the beach, adding a sense of adventure.
2. The freshwater river flows through the palm forest, creating an exotic setting.
3. Visitors can swim in both the river and the crystal-clear sea.

Preveli Beach and Palm Forest

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

Palazzo Zuccari, located near the iconic Spanish Steps in Rome, stands out as a truly unique and whimsical architectural gem. Often referred to as the 'Monster House' due to its distinctive façade, this building is a delightful sight that never fails to bring a smile to those who pass by.

Chile

Chile’s El Tatio Geysers form the largest geyser field in the Southern Hemisphere and the third-largest in the world, located at an altitude of 4,320 meters (14,170 feet) in the Atacama Desert.
