The Japanese art of visible mending is sashiko, a technique that combines the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi with the always en vogue concept of sustainable practices. In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

In this three-hour experience, you’ll enjoy making a Fernwayer exclusive sashiko pouch designed by Keiko as you chat with Keiko and learn about the fascinating art of sashiko mending. The pace of the workshop is relaxed to allow for plenty of one-on-one coaching, and there is a private experience option for those who want a truly exclusive experience. You’ll leave Keiko’s workshop with a comfortable grasp on sashiko techniques, and the tools and materials needed to continue practicing at home.

Keiko’s experience immerses you in the world of sashiko. By stitching visible repairs, you connect deeply with sashiko’s wabi-sabi philosophy. 

The workshop is geared toward intermediate crafters who wish to gain a deeper knowledge of this traditional Japanese craft. You will spend over two hours working on a special sashiko pouch specially designed by Keiko for this experience, getting tips and coaching as you work. You will also have time for a short tea break to enjoy a little snack and chat with Keiko and ask any questions you might have.

Both the shared option and private workshop provide an extended timeframe compared to a typical session, and the private lesson ensures you make the most of your time with her. 

Keiko has also prepared a thoughtfully selected pack of the tools and materials you will need to continue practicing your sashiko skills when you return home or during your travels, including sashiko needles, a thimble, and a selection of materials.

Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. 2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority.
