Marcela's home studio overlooks one of Concón's quaint fishing hamlets and sets the scene for an afternoon of creativity and calm.

Before starting, Marcela will share anecdotes relating to Concón and Valparaíso. Under her guidance, you'll try your hand at crafting a monotype print inspired by Chile's landscapes and mythology. Marcela will support you through creating the design and nurturing your natural talent and proving that everyone has an inner artist. By the time the activity is complete, your print will be ready to take away. No prior experience or skills in drawing or printmaking are necessary. To conclude your trip to Concón, Marcela will serve a light "once" of tea and pastries as well as recommending local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

The experience provides rare access to the home studio of a professional Chilean artist. Marcela's portfolio spans lithography, painting, and folk art and she will share rich insight into Chile's artisanal legacy and culture while you create—storytelling lies at the heart of this activity. Marcela's studio stands above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concón, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. In terms of inspiration, you only need glance outside where dunes tumble to meet the waves of the Pacific and seals cling to rocky crags. Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist. Born in 1965, Marcela grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis, USA, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at Casa Plan in Valparaíso.

Hosted in his intimate restaurant, Chef Toshihiko Yamamoto will explain the history and importance of dashi in Japanese cooking while together, you prepare a fresh batch of dashi to use for an exquisite meal. You will shave the dried bonito into flakes and boil it with kombu kelp into a broth rich with umami flavor.

Next, Chef Yamamoto will prepare a special meal with a little help from you, creating Western-Japanese fusion dishes to show how easily dashi can be used as an ingredient to your own style of cuisine. As he prepares the meal, feel free to ask questions or take photos and video of the process. This is a full-day photography journey to the high Andean salt flats on the Chilean Altiplano. Located in the northeastern corner of the Atacama Desert near the border with Bolivia, Quepiaco, Quisquiro, and Tara are among the most visually striking and ecologically unique landscapes in the region. These salt flats—salars—sit at elevations between 4,000-4,500m (13,000-14,800 feet) above sea level and are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Bounded by volcanoes and inhabited by flamingos and vicuñas, this is a remarkable setting for both landscape and wildlife photography.

At each salt flat, Mirko will explain the geological features of the wetlands and salt crusts, point out native wildlife, and provide practical instruction on how to photograph it. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Eclairs, ratatouille, fromage – mhmm, so yummy – paired with a glass of wine and pleasant company, a French cooking class is a trip for all the senses (and fun, too). We opted for a private cooking class in Paris with Léo, a chef who has cooked in several top restaurants throughout his life. 

The first dish we learned how to cook was a French cheese plate and handmade bread accompanied by filled vine leaves. After that, we learned about French cuisine, the main ingredients, preparation methods, history, and drank some more wine. We learned what ingredients make the French kitchen unique (wine, vinegar, and cheese) and made a delicious ratatouille, one of France's most popular vegetable dishes. 

We read you can also do these courses online, but you have to get the ingredients and tools beforehand. A good option for digital visitors!

Rome from the Sky

It’s a new day in Sossusvlei. And I am rising towards the sky, timed perfectly with the rising sun, in a wicker basket attached to a hot air balloon. It’s my first balloon ride!

The sand dunes of the Namib desert are taking their time turning orange in the glow of dawn. Our pilot tells us that in Namibia, the only time one can fly a balloon is the sunrise hour. She can’t steer the balloon but she can control the altitude, and depending on the wind channels at each altitude, choose her preferred “course”. 

It’s more peaceful than I imagined. The sound of quiet is unnerving, but no one in the gondola wants to break the peace. In fact, the only sound to be heard is the feverish clicking of cameras. I could get used to seeing the world from this perspective.

Güzelyurt Village

The Moroccan fig liquor is beginning to sneak up on me. Or perhaps it’s the jet lag. The soulful music of the live folk vocalist is not helping either. 

We’re waiting for dinner, in the courtyard of a restored Riad. It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten much during the flight because very soon, it’s clear that they expect me to have the appetite of a small army. 

The food is absolutely delicious, and here’s what I learn:
“Salad” is a selection of 5-10 amazing dips served with khobz - flatbread. 
Pigeon pastille is a must-have any time you see it on a menu!
Tagine of lamb with fluffy couscous - when cooked to perfection as it is here - is irresistible. 

This is followed by an elaborate dessert course, mint tea prepared with precision and ceremony, gnawa singers and a belly dancer who insists on audience participation. 

This story celebrates a series of unforgettable meals in Marrakesh - some in fine restaurants and others on the street.

Of Pigeon Pastille

The Accademia Gallery in Florence, renowned for housing Michelangelo's David, is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture. As the second most visited museum in Florence, it offers a collection that includes a $16 million dollar violin and significant works of the Renaissance and beyond​​. Go on a journey of discovery through various art periods, techniques, and cultural histories. Here are our top recommendations:

1 -  As the focal point of the Accademia, Michelangelo’s David is a representation of strength, beauty, and human achievement. Created from a single block of marble, this masterpiece symbolizes the Renaissance ideals of humanism and is renowned for its anatomical precision and the portrayal of David before his battle with Goliath.

2 - The Hall of Prisoners features unfinished works by Michelangelo, known as "Prisoners" or "Slaves". These sculptures were intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II but were never completed. They offer a unique insight into Michelangelo's process, where the figures seem to be struggling to free themselves from the marble, embodying the concept of the "unfinished" in art​​​​.

3 - The Gipsoteca is a collection of plaster casts by the 19th-century sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. Art Galleries of Essaouira

Pinacoteca di Brera is one of Milan's most prestigious art galleries, housing a significant collection of Italian and foreign art from the 13th to the 20th century. Located in the Palazzo di Brera, which dates back to the late Baroque period and was built on the remains of a 14th-century monastery, the Pinacoteca shares its space with the Academy of Fine Arts. Why is this a cool place to visit?
Historical Significance: The gallery was born out of a political action, distinct from other major Italian museums that originated from private collections of monarchs or noble families. The Brera Gallery was officially established in 1809, although its first collection existed from 1776 alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti, instituted by Maria Theresa of Austria. 

Notable Masterpieces: The Pinacoteca di Brera's collection includes several world-renowned masterpieces. Some of the top paintings housed in the gallery are "The Marriage of the Virgin" by Raphael, "The Feast in the House of Simon" by Paolo Veronese, "Supper at Emmaus" by Caravaggio, "Last Supper" by Peter Paul Rubens, and "The Kiss" by Francesco Hayez. Anafiotika Neighborhood

Chile’s Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile, stretching over 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) in the heart of the Atacama Desert. Framed by the Andes Mountains and home to spectacular salt-crusted landscapes and vibrant flamingo-filled lagoons, this surreal environment offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike. Salar de Atacama

Miramare Castle, overlooking the Adriatic Sea near Trieste, is a stunning embodiment of 19th-century eclecticism. Built as the residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and his wife Charlotte, this castle blends Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance elements, offering visitors a glimpse into a royal past.
