Día de Muertos is a celebration of memory, artistry, and belonging. Offered daily from October 29 to November 2, the experience traces the festival’s rhythm from creation to commemoration: from flowers and food, to processions and light.

You’ll begin in the market, where marigold and pan de muerto fill the air with color and scent. Paco guides your eye to texture and detail—petals in sunlight, powdered sugar on hands, vendors arranging altars of fruit and candles.

Next, visit a local home to see and photograph an ofrenda being built. Families arrange photos, bread, mezcal, and candles. You’re welcomed to respectfully capture gestures of care, memory and love—and may even place a few elements yourself.

After lunch, Paco arranges a short face-painting or mask-making session with a local artist. Then, you join one or two calendas (comparsas): joyful street processions of music and masks. Paco helps you move with the rhythm, framing the motion of dancers and the intimacy of onlookers.

This experience focuses on the making and meaning of Día de Muertos. Paco’s approach is personal—he guides you like a friend with a camera, not a tour guide.

You see a full day of traditions: market in morning light, the concentration of altar-building, the late-day crescendo of music and color. Paco teaches you to read light, to ask permission before photographing, to sense when to shoot and when to simply be present.

This tour emphasizes what Día de Muertos feels like—the scent of copal, the warmth of shared work, the joy that sits comfortably beside remembrance. You photograph people taking part in a shared act of honoring life. Note also that in this experience, there is no intrusion into family time or cemetery rituals.

Sharing Food & Reflection

You start at Oaxaca’s bustling market, alive with scent and color: armfuls of cempasúchil, towers of pan de muerto, candles, fruit, and sugar skulls in every hue.

In this first stop, Paco leads you through the market. You photograph flower sellers, fruit vendors, and families buying offerings. You’ll learn to frame texture and rhythm — petals in baskets, powdered sugar on hands, the soft smoke of copal rising. The market is more than supply; it’s the pulse of the celebration.

Rather than rush through, Paco helps you slow down — reading light, finding human gestures, and engaging respectfully with local vendors. You begin to understand how the altar, the food, and the flower are all forms of remembrance — each color and scent carrying meaning.

You’ll also pause for a coffee or Mexican local drink and a taste of local snacks at the market.

The Color of Beginnings

A family home opens its doors as generations gather to build the altar — photos, bread, candles, mezcal, and flowers arranged with care and intention.

You join a local household as they prepare their ofrenda. Paco introduces you to the family, and guides you through the etiquette of photographing respectfully. You may help place a few elements — candles, flowers, a glass of water — small acts that deepen connection.

Building the Ofrenda

Choose your expression — a traditional face-painting session with a local artist or the chance to craft and wear a hand-painted mask, both rooted in local imagery and symbolism. You’ll need to send your choice in advance to Paco at the time of booking so he can arrange a local artist accordingly. Keep in mind – slots fill up quickly.

After lunch, Paco arranges a 30-minute session led by local artists. You may opt for subtle, symbolic face painting inspired by La Catrina and local floral motifs, or for a handmade mask that draws from Oaxacan papel maché and folk imagery. Both are created with cultural context, genuine local artists, real connection.

These sessions honor tradition. The artist explains the symbolism — how the calavera celebrates continuity, not death. The designs are personal, thoughtful, and made to be part of the calenda, not to dominate it.

This rare-access experience is a private photoshoot with a real Maiko — a young woman apprenticing to become a Geisha. Maiko are renowned for their colorful kimono, elaborately styled hair, and refined manners. Most visitors are lucky to catch even a fleeting glimpse of them as they move quickly through Kyoto’s streets between appointments. Recent regulations protect Maiko from unwanted attention from tourists. But in this experience, you’ll have the privilege of spending relaxed, uninterrupted time photographing and engaging with a Maiko.

The photo shoot takes place at a one-of-a-kind heritage house in Kyoto – the perfect, atmospheric backdrop for the session. Under the guidance of a professional expert photographer, you’ll learn how to use both natural and artificial light to create evocative portraits. You'll also practice how to work with a live subject — learning and practicing how to pose and frame your subject to evoke emotion and tell a story through your lens. 

This fully private session offers an extraordinary opportunity to interact with a Maiko while learning professional portrait photography techniques. An entire historic house in Kyoto is reserved exclusively for your session — offering creative freedom to explore light, setting and subject. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. 5. These peaceful areas also make perfect picnic spots. Shaded areas near the Fonte da Benémola springs or the Rocha da Pena plateau provide scenic and serene locations to relax with a meal.

Algarve’s Picturesque Trails

This is a Gothic-Renaissance palace that once served as the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa. Today, it houses a museum displaying artifacts from Dubrovnik's history​​. Originally erected in the 15th century, this historical edifice has weathered disasters including explosions, fires, and earthquakes, notably being rebuilt after significant damages in 1435, 1463, and the devastating 1667 earthquake. The Chora Church, now the Kariye Mosque, is a breathtaking testament to Byzantine artistry and architecture, tucked away in the quiet Edirnekapı neighborhood of Istanbul. Kariye Mosque

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Tumbling Recklessly

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

600 meters off the coast of Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island offers visitors a unique blend of botanical gardens, historical ruins, and crystal-clear waters. Whether you're a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply in search of tranquility, Lokrum invites exploration and relaxation. Why visit:

4: Panoramic Perch: Climb to Fort Royal Castle for breathtaking views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea. Built by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, this highest point on the island is the perfect spot for panoramic photographs and a moment of reflection on the beauty below.
 
5: Game of Thrones Magic: Fans of the series will delight in visiting the island's GoT Visitor Center. Housed in the Benedictine Monastery, it features an Iron Throne replica and exhibits on the show’s filming, which took place on Lokrum and in nearby Dubrovnik.
 
Tickets can be purchased at the Port of Dubrovnik or online at Lokrum's official website. The best time to visit is during the spring or early fall, with pleasant weather, and less crowds.

The Guadalquivir River Walk in Seville offers a peaceful yet vibrant way to experience the city’s charm while enjoying scenic views along one of Spain’s most historic rivers. Stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir, this popular promenade links some of Seville’s most famous attractions, offering a blend of history, culture, and leisure activities. The river itself played a key role in Seville’s development, once serving as the main conduit for trade with the New World. Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

The historical Tavira, a captivating town in the Algarve region of Portugal, was one of the first Phoenician settlements in the Iberian West. Tavira's unique blend of historical influences, from its Moorish occupation to the Christian reconquest, has left a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Top 5 highlights:
- Tavira was a significant Moorish stronghold from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The town still reflects this era with its whitewashed buildings, distinctive Moorish-style doors, and rooftops. Jamaica

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.
