Mapping Cultures, One Story at a Time
Our view sculpts the world we inhabit, and, in turn, the world forms who we are. This is where we trace our roots, observe the present, and share possible future paths. Say hello to Wayer, Fernwayer’s new journal, where we use travel to explore culture as a living timeline of our interconnected human story.
There’s a recurring conversation here at Fernwayer: What do we actually mean when we talk about culture? We’re not the first to wrestle with this elusive concept, and we won’t be the last. Yet, at a time when the impact of tourism on cultural heritage — both visible and invisible — is under more scrutiny than ever, we feel it’s important to explore culture in all its dimensions.
From the tangible, material elements that represent heritage — historic monuments, arts, and even the ingredients and tools that shape regional cuisines — to the intangible living practices that communities pass down and keep alive, culture take many forms. This is why Wayer was born. Fernwayer's new journal will not attempt to draw boundaries around the concept of culture; on the contrary, it aims to portray its endless expressions as they change and evolve across the globe. Through the voices of international writers and local experts, we aim to frame rituals and traditions as they are reinterpreted year after year, creative currents as they broaden public discourse, and places as they negotiate their identities with the changing needs and desires of society. Each story, rooted in its own time, helps us see where we’re coming from and where we might be going. As travelers, we value the present moment. For this reason, we emphasize Wayer’s chronological approach to exploring culture rather than a strictly geographical one. As you discover new places — either physically through our experiences or through our long-form essays — this is our invitation to cherish the privilege of observing the ephemeral elements of a planet that renews itself day after day. Every encounter has its context, and every action has its consequence. In our Rooted In section, we shed light on past chapters of our shared history exploring what material traces from previous eras can tell us about today’s world. The Living Culture section celebrates people and examines how long-standing customs and practices are being kept alive, preserved, and reimagined. The Fresh Ground section builds on our current understanding to offer fresh perspectives on the future ahead.
